St. Mark’s Hospital Promotes Health at the Diabetes Expo

SALT LAKE CITY – St. Mark’s Hospital is the presenting sponsor of the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Expo, which will be held this Saturday, February 28. Physicians, registered nurses, registered diabetes educators and other healthcare professionals from St. Mark’s will provide complimentary health screenings. These include diabetes risk assessments using blood glucose testing, blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol screenings.

The Diabetes Expo provides education and information that can help people to better manage or prevent this disease. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 at the South Town Expo Center – 9575 South State Street in Sandy. For more information, visit

“With the incidence of diabetes rising daily, we are reaching out on Saturday to help people identify their diabetes risk,” says Sarah Kurrus, R.N. community outreach manager at St. Mark’s Hospital. “Of course, the experts at our Diabetes Center are available year round to help diabetics to more effectively manage what can be a life-threatening disease.”

St. Mark’s Diabetes Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the Utah Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. Its staff provides support, expert guidance and education about diabetes self-management to local residents who are among the 124,000-plus diabetics in Utah and the 45,000 undiagnosed Utahns.

According to the Utah Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, approximately 500 Utahns die from diabetes every year. Nationwide, 23.6 million people have diabetes; 17.9 million have already been diagnosed and it is estimated that 5.7 million have this disease but are currently undiagnosed.
