Stroke Facts

A stroke, sometimes referred to as a “brain attack,” is a sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain. Within minutes, the brain tissue starts to die and, as a result, the victim experiences a sudden loss of function.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and serious long-term disability in the United States. It affects around 700,000 people each year, causing approximately 163,000 deaths annually. If left untreated, a stroke victim loses 1.9 million neurons every minute. Compared to the normal rate of aging, that translates to the human brain aging 3.6 years every hour it goes without treatment.
