St. Mark’s Hospital is once again the only hospital in Utah to achieve the Healthgrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award™. This is the fourth time in a row that its cardiovascular team distinguished itself by delivering clinical care that consistently ensures exceptional outcomes for patients.
“St. Mark’s Hospital is incredibly proud of our cardiovascular surgeons and team for achieving 3-star status, once again, in coronary bypass and valve replacement surgery. As the only hospital in Utah and only one of a very small number within HCA’s network of 180 hospitals with this designation, this speaks to the tremendous commitment of our physicians and staff towards providing the safest and highest quality cardiovascular care to those we serve.” Said Ralph Costanzo, Chief Medical Officer at St. Mark’s Hospital.
St. Mark’s is also the only hospital in the state to earn three stars this year from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons – for the third time in a row. This award recognizes outstanding outcomes for patients who undergo an aortic valve replacement combined with coronary artery bypass grafting or mitral valve replacement and repair surgery.
Additionally, the Salt Lake City-based hospital earned the Healthgrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ for the second consecutive time. With the achievement of the two excellence awards, St. Mark’s remains among the top 10 percent in the nation for both coronary interventions and joint replacements. This level of excellence recognizes the implementation of evidence-based processes across the continuum of patient care, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and recovery.
St. Mark’s Hospital also achieved multiple consecutive five-star ratings for clinical quality based on the Healthgrades evaluation of data from nearly 4,500 hospitals covering years 2015 through 2017. Overall, that means its exceptional caregivers and support staff successfully reduced risk for patients and optimized clinical outcomes.
As a result of its most recent study, Healthgrades recognized St. Mark’s with the following:
- Coronary Intervention Excellence Award – four years in a row (2016-2019)
- Joint Replacement Excellence Award – two consecutive years (2018-2019)
- Five-star rated for total knee replacement for 14 years (2005-2014, 2016-2019)
- Seventh consecutive five-star rating for sepsis treatment (2013-2019)
- Fourth consecutive five-star rated for coronary interventional procedures (2016-2019)
- Second consecutive five-star rating for hip replacement for (2018-2019)
- Five-star rated for stroke treatment (2019)
Based on its Report to the Nation, Healthgrades reported, “If all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 222,210 lives could potentially have been saved and 157,210 complications could potentially have been avoided.”
Healthgrades annual reports are independently created; no hospital can opt in or opt out of the annual studies and hospitals do not pay to be rated. The organization determines recipients of Excellence Awards through its evaluation of the occurrence of observed incidents and expected performance for patient safety indicators as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
