4 Ways to Purify the Air at Home

Did you know indoor air can be two to five times dirtier than outdoor air? Yuck! But you can fight poor air qual­ity with these tips:

Bring in more fresh air. Opening windows and doors or running an attic or window fan can greatly improve your home’s air quality. It’s especially important to invite fresh air in when you’re cleaning, painting or doing other activities that produce pollutants.

Vacuum with a vengeance. Dust mites and pet dander can dimin­ish indoor air quality and cause allergy flareups. These pesky allergens often lurk in fabrics. Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture at least once a week, wash bedding and towels in hot water, and keep pets off couches and beds.

Replace central air filters. How often you should change your HVAC filter depends on several factors. If you live in a pet-free home and don’t suffer from aller­gies, 90 days is standard. If you have pets and/or allergies, you may want to replace it every month. If you’re prone to forgetfulness, add a reminder to your calendar.

Be careful with candles. Burning candles may feel peaceful, but they can release toxic chemi­cals—starting with the match used to light them. Set the right mood with battery-operated candles. If you must use real candles, look for beeswax or soy varieties, and use them only in well-ventilated spaces.
