St. Mark's Hospital - September 01, 2016

On August 17, 2016, St. Mark’s Hospital laboratory began offering a multiplex PCR panel for the detection of 6 bacteria, 7 viruses, and 1 fungus from a single CSF specimen providing results within 1-2 hours using the rapid molecular identification methods of the FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) Panel from BioFire Diagnostics which is now FDA approved and provides overall sensitivity and specificity of 94.2% and 99.8% respectively. This test can significantly reduce the time to appropriate pharmacotherapy, improving patient outcomes and reducing long-term healthcare costs. This is a reflex test that will be performed on all CSF specimens with greater than 5 WBC/mm3. If this test is indicated in a situation when reflex criteria have not been met, test can also be ordered as “ME Panel” in Epic.
